Women's T.V Commercials

The homework task was to look for 3 adverts featuring women, however from different time periods, and the roles of these women. One from the 1960's with the traditional roles of women, then of the women being sexually objectified and known as the whores and then the role of typical stereotypes being challenged.

1. This is an advert from the 1960's featuring a housewife cleaning the house with the amazing Ajax.

By watching the comercial, we can see that there is such a difference from the traditional representations of women in previous years, they were traditional housewives and that was their job to stay in the kitchen and clean the house. This advert had great campaigns (as said on it's website) as it targeted a great deal of women, however nowadays these adverts have disappeared due to feminism and the equalities between men and women.

2. This is a Lynx advert which features women in their bikini's.

This advert portrays women as obsessed and sex animals, it shows them wearing bikini's and running after a man who has lynx sprayed all over him. The women can also be seen as whores as they are dressed in that style and also they are desperate for a guy and need a guy. The women are also sexually objectified by the "male gaze."

3.This advert i found was on Youtube and the title was, can women park cars? and also this was a mazda advert, which shows that women are more active.

This women, was very active, whereas into the 1950s and 60s women's roles were more passive and typical. This advert challenges the stereotypes. Also this advert features the woman doing the amazing parking and the men are just looking at the woman and surprised.

This research is useful for my study as i can relate this to my institution section as Columbia pictures is the production of Spiderman 2.

There is much male dominance in the scene and there are connotations of patriarchy especially as Shaun comes up with several failed plans. The plans mainly consist of Ed and Shaun saving the two damsels in distress, Barbara (Shaun’s mum) and Liz (Shaun’s girlfriend). Shaun is conveyed as the hero, Ed acts as the donor and the helper, helping with the development of the plan and Liz is the princess (Propp).

This is relvent to my study as it talks about propp and the hero, villain etc which is useful.

Pulp Fiction: Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman)

In this film, she is a gangster's wife and it can be suggested she is seen upon as a vulnerable person who needs looking after. This is because in the film, while her husband is away she is taken to dinner with Vincent, this shows that Mia has to always be dependent on a man. Later on in the night "she overdoses on his (vincent's) heroin thinking it to be cocaine, and he fights to save her life. She goes home and they promise to never talk of the evening's events." This enforces the stereotype that women are vulnerable and need men to save them from evil. And as the audience do not see Mia again in the film, Tarantino does not allow for her character to change or be developed.

This is useful for my study as it talks about women's role and how the female character depends on men. In Spiderman 2, MJ likes Spidey, however when she does not get him she has another boyfriend which also links to this.

First-wave feminism:

Feminist movement in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, which primarily focused on gaining the right of women's suffrage. The term was not used during the time of the movement; the term was coined retroactively after second-wave feminism began to be used to describe a newer feminist movement- being able to vote and freedom of speech.

Second-wave feminism:

Feminist thought that originated around the 1960s and was mainly concerned with independence and greater political action to improve women's rights. By this time women and teenagers were getting more stronger.

Third-wave feminism:

Feminist movement that arguably began in the early 1990s. Unlike second-wave feminism, which largely focused on the inclusion of women in traditionally male-dominated areas, third-wave feminism seeks to challenge and expand common definitions of gender and sexuality- lesbians.

This can be useful for my study as it's all about the waves of feminism however in the film spiderman 2, it does not give women that chance to grow or to be independent as the film focuses on the male characters.
