Task 7: 10 More Key Words
1. Binary Opposition: a term used by Claude Levi-Strauss as part of his argument that narratives are structured around oppositional elements in human culture, for example, good and evil, life and death, night and day, raw and cooked. The audience is attracted by the dynamics of this conflict with the possible variations leading usually to the ultimate triumph of good.
This theory is useful for the study as the superhero genre features binary oppositions which will be helpful for me to go into more depth.
2. Conspiracy Theory: a pessemistic and realistic view of the structure and operation of power within the media organisations, which sees them as being controlled by a highly organised and coordinated elite.
This word is helpful as part of my argument is the theme of the film and why is it common and why do children like these kinds of movies.
3. Dystopia: a dysfunctional narratives are extensions of the science-fiction/action genre and often extended and expand existing conditions to heighten the sense of realism.
I can use this world in my study as spiderman uses dystopia and the world being controled by another power.
4. Empathy: the ability to share the emotions or point of view of a group or individual.
This can be used as the superhero has empathy from the audience, which will be useful for the study.
5. Fantasy: genre built around an artificially constructed reality which could never exist in real life, often involvingclassical mythology or fairy tale e.g. (real human characters against mythical or supernatural creatures).
This term can be useful as it will argue that these superheroic film include these themes.
6. Gender: psychological and cultural aspects of behaviour associated with masculinity and femininity, acquired through socialisation, in accordance with the expectations of a particular society.
I can use this in the study as spiderman 2 is all about gender roles and the expectations.
7. Hero: the principal male or female protagonist in any narrative, with whom the audience identifies and who exhibits moral virtues in line with dominant ideology.
This word is also useful as my study is all about superheroes and heros.
8. Patriarchy: male domination of the political, cultural and socioeconomic system.
This term is prbably the most used word which will be mentioned in the independent study, which is also very useful.
9. Propp, Vladimir (1895-1970): Russian formalist writer and folklorist who analysed the structure of folk stories in his work, (hero, princess, villain etc)
This theorist will also be used in the study as spiderman 2 also uses these themes.
10. Metonym: part of a representational image used to stand for a whole in such a way that the vieweris able to construct the rest of the story from the part given.
This term is also useful as the film tries to convey the story by metonyms.
