Phillips, Patrick (2000): Understanding Film Texts (Meaning and Experience). London, UK: British Film Institute.

This book is useful for my independent study as it is all about analysing film texts and what their connotations are the purpose behind it. It has good textual analysis of other films which i can then use for the analysis of my text.

Branston, Gill and Stafford, Roy (1996, 1999): The Media Students Book (Second Edition). USA and Canada: Routledge.

This book includes the key concepts, however it covers a wide range of the wider contexts which is very beneficial for my study as i will be looking into this in great detail.

Benyahia, Sarah Casey, Gaffney, Freddie and White, John (2006): A2 Film Studies - The Essential Introduction. USA and Canada: Routledge.

This book is more of a media studies exercise book, however it will help in my study as it includes all types of film study analysis in a lot of detail from key concepts to wider contexts to case studies to statistics.

Brode, Douglas (2003): Boys and Toys - Ultimate Action-Adventure Movies. New York: Kensington Publishing Corp.

This book is totally relevant to my study as it focuses on male protagonists or heroes in action, adventure films which is the most important argument of my study.

Nelmes, Jill (1999): An Introduction to Film Studies (Second Edition). London: Routledge.

This book introduces a theme or topic then explains in great detail on what it means with illustrations of related film texts which is also helpful, along with that there is a lot textual analysis which again is helpful for my study.

McCrisken, Trevor and Pepper Andrew (2005): American History and Contemporary Hollywood Film. Edinburgh London: Edinbrugh University Press.

This book looks at American history but also looks at the contemporary American films which is also partly linked with the study as my film text also focuses on the ideological state and the patriot.

Moseley, Rachel (2005):Fashioning Film Stars (Dress, Culture, Identity). London: British Film Institute.

This book is very interesting as it talks about the characters' dress, costumes and the impact it has on culture, their identity and the audience, which i thought will be quite useful as Spiderman is also a film which has a lot going on about the characters costume and the impact.

Counsell, Colin and Wolf Laurie (2001, 2004): Performance Analysis. London, USA and Canada: Routledge.

I dont really think that this book is directly linked with film and in particular my study, however it includes feminism, theories such as Barthes and Levi-Strauss, which i can also look into to receive a few ideas.
