Task 6: Spiderman 2 Scene Analysis

Media Language: The scene has long shots of the heroine (M.J) tied up on a pole where she is captured by the villain of the movie (Doc Ock). The long shots shows are showing the females state how she is in distress and is struggling to release herself. There are close-ups of when the hero (Spidey) comes to save her, which connotes him being the saviour and the close-up on M.J's face indicates to the audience that she is now out of the distress. The mise-en-scene shows a very dull, wet and dark scene which also creates the mood of the scene and creates sympathy from the audience towards the female character. The sound effects used in this scene are heroic when spiderman comes to rescue his lover, which gives a sense of hope to the audience and M.J herself.

Institution: This film is a big budget hollywood movie, produced by columbia pictures. This scene is very major in the film, that actually bring spiderman's true face infront of M.J who cannot believe it, which has also been seen in trailers for the film to be more appealing and attentive.

Genre: The film is said to be action, fantasy, sci-fi, thriller and the light, romantic element used. This scene i would say includes almost all these generic elements, which gives makes the scene more exciting.

Representation: The scene has not shown any ethnic minorities and used the three key characters; hero, heroine and the villain. The stereotypes used in this scene and the rest of the film, they are not being challenged however being reinforced, which connotes that the contemporary superheroic films have still not changed from the past and still feature the formulaic themes.

Audience: The audience are young, pre teen males, and other males, the reason for this is that it is a film about males superheroes which will attract them and give them a sense of courage, in this scene the audience are taking narrative pleasure of suspense and some adventurous elements.

Ideologies & Values: The scene consists of all white characters; also, the three characters in the scene are both the hero and the villain showing the evil male and the heroic male.

Narrative: The film is ofcourse a sequel and is having another sequel Spiderman 3. In this scene there is a narrative closure with binary oppositions used and the narrative roles have been reinforced.
